Palm Pre Outlook Exchange Bug Fix

Palm Pre Email Error Messages We’re treating today:

“Service Method Exception: java.io.IOException: Unable to make space in FileCache”

“Download of the message body timed out. The system will retry soon”

There is (was) a serious problem with my Outlook email recently. I sync to Microsoft Exchange Server and it’s really important that I’m able to both read emails at any time of day, and to send them as well from my Palm Pre. For the last several weeks however I’ve been getting the below errors:

I could download and read email captions fine, but I could not download the message body. Instead I got this message: Download of the message body timed out. The system will retry soon.

I could download and read email captions fine, but I could not download the message body. Instead I got this message: "Download of the message body timed out. The system will retry soon."

This same thing fixes the problem with sending emails in Exchange when you get the Unable to make space in filecache message.

This same thing fixes the problem with sending emails in Exchange when you get the "Unable to make space in filecache" message.

So, to sum it all up, the fix is strange and easy. Simply remove your battery for a few seconds, and reconnect it. It might have something to do with the Palm Pre not fully resetting when you turn it off, so removing and reconnecting the battery is the only true hard reset, thus fixing this Exchange email bug.

To Replace the battery:

Taking off the battery cover the very first time is more difficult than it will ever be in subsequent times.

1. First, push the small button down at the bottom of the phone. It’s the little rubber button that would be facing your chest if you were holding the Palm Pre flat in your Palm. It’s small enough that you’ll need to use the edge of a fingernail perhaps.

2. Next, lift up on the bottom half of the battery cover. It should begin to peel off but not entirely. It will feel like you’re bending your about to break it. Don’t bend it that far, but bend it enough to get the edge of a fingernail along the right side of the Palm Pre, sliding it up the crack you are making as you peel the cover off.

3. Sliding your finger through the slit should eventually pop the top off. A black tab allows you to pull and disconnect the battery. Disconnect it for 10 seconds, and replace it, simply slide it back into place.

4. The battery cover should pop back on and slide a little into place quite easily.

Hmmm, I tried this to no avail. I am also having problems setting up the EAS for my work exchange, although my business exchange account seems to work fine.

I have been unsuccessful at getting the error you describe above to rectify by taking out the battery.

That fix didn’t work for me either. I gave up and switched to gmail IMAP. Since the Pre supports IMAP IDLE, it works well enough for me. I get notified automatically when a new email arrives. Maybe I’ll switch to EAS if this bug gets resolved in the next webOS release.

1.2.1 was supposed to fix this, at least, that’s what most people have been saying. I’m using EAS for gmail to sync my calendar and contacts as well as the email, but the battery “fix” didn’t help out at all. Unfortunetly, since I’m using the calendar/contacts syncing, IMAP just won’t cut it.

Strange that while I can’t get email, the calendar and contacts syncing works flawlessly…. Naturally.
