Palm Pre In Landscape Mode

The Palm Pre has an accelerometer; a small internal device that allows you to control the palm pre by simply moving or tilting it. This function is commonly used already in devices like the iPhone or the Zune to change back and forth between portrait and landscape mode, or in other words, to reverse the aspect ratio and view the screen in terms of “up and down” or “side to side”. Another important application for the accelerometer is in gaming apps which are becoming more and more ubiquitous in smart phones like the iPhone.

Pre Release Reviews of the Palm Pre’s Acceleromter

Boy Genius Report has played with a pre release sample version of the Palm Pre and praises the acceleromter more than most of the hardware features of the Pre. Other than the acceleromter, a few other physical hardware features like the touch screen, and the OS, Boy Genius felt somewhat non-plussed by most other hardware aspects. They said that “the accelerometer was absolutely positively instant.” In other words, they describe it to be quite responsive.
